Nassau Alternative
Motivational Enhancement Therapy
MET is often used as part of a complete addiction treatment program with several other behavioral therapies, including 12-step programs and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). These therapies use specific techniques to guide patients through behavioral change.
- Nassau Alternative MET approach that helps clients resolve their ambivalence about engaging in treatment and stops their drug use. MET evokes rapid and internally motivated change, rather than guide the patient stepwise through the recovery process.
- Nassau Alternative uses the initial assessment battery session, followed by two individual treatment sessions with a therapist. In the first treatment session, the Primary Counselor provides feedback to the initial assessment, stimulating discussion about personal substance use and eliciting self-motivational statements.
- Motivational interviewing principles strengthen motivation and build a plan for change. Coping strategies for high-risk situations are suggested and discussed with the patient. In subsequent sessions, the therapist and patient monitor change, review cessation strategies being used, and continue to encourage commitment to change. Patients are encouraged to bring a significant other to sessions.
- The MET approach has been used successfully with patients suffering from Substance Use Disorders, improving retention in treatment, and reducing substance abuse.
